Press Release: Old Alabama Town - An Illustrated Guide

This book is the first comprehensive guide to a premier Alabama historical and architectural landmark, lavishly illustrated and affordably priced. Old Alabama Town, An Illustrated Guide is a visual and historical chronicle of one of the South’s important architectural landmarks.

Developed in 1967 by Landmarks Foundation of Montgomery, Old Alabama Town brings to life the architecture, history and lifestyles of the past. Situated in the heart of downtown Montgomery, Old Alabama Town offers more than 50 authentically restored structures, all formerly in danger of demolition.

Visitors may explore a log cabin, shotgun house, grange hall, tavern, church, cotton gin, grist mill, blacksmith shop, a one-room schoolhouse, an elegant townhouse, and more. Each historic building creates its own distinctive image of living and working in Alabama’s past.

This full-color paperback guide illustrates and provides an overview of each structure and is supplemented by a map, archival photographs and 60 contemporary color photographs. Useful to tourists, preservationists, students and scholars of Alabama history and architecture, as well as those interested in an interpretive museum of southern life.

 4th Annual Tavern Fest
  09-26-2003

Historic North Hull Street
Lined with colorful Victorian cottages is the ideal setting for Tavern Fest, an outdoor music festival at Old Alabama Town. The fun block-party comes on Friday night, October 24th, just as the leaves begin to drop from the trees and the night temperatures turn cooler. The annual event is centered around the 1818 Lucas Tavern located in the heart of historic down-town Montgomery, only four blocks from the state capitol. This historic landmark is the ideal setting for a fall festival where attendees will taste specialty brews and sample “craft beers” in the courtyard behind the tavern, listen to world-class musical performances positioned within the historic grounds, dance in the streets or just sit on one of the inviting porches and listen to tunes.

The headliner featured on the North Hull Street stage will be the talented Blues performer, Papa Mali & The Instagators. They bring a mix of southern fried soul, blunted Delta blues, New Orleans funk, and tribal hoodoo rhythms. Also featured will be Lionz, The Spike Graham Band and Lisa Busler. Gates open at 6:00 pm with tasting from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm and music from 7:30 pm to 10:30 pm. Individual tickets are $8.00 in advance and $10.00 at the gate. Reservations for tables for 10 are $100 and may be purchased from the Reception Center (limited tables available). Tables will be located adjacent to the main stage on North Hull Street. Mark your calendars now for a great night of fun, food, drinks, and music at Old Alabama Town’s 4th annual music festival at Lucas Tavern. For information call 334-240-4500 0r 1-888-240-1850.
