 "Dexter Avenue: Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow” Walking Tour

Sunday, September 30th, 2 pm to 4 pm
Landmarks Foundation invites you to join historians, architectural historians and preservationists for a walking tour of one of Alabama’s most famous streets, Dexter Avenue, for a look at its past, present and future. Join historian, Dr. Richard Bailey; architectural historian, Bob Gamble; preservationist and city planner, Christy Anderson; and historian Mary Ann Neeley as they discuss the history, architecture and future plans for Dexter Avenue. The tour will lead participants from Court Square to Decatur Street. Meet at Court Square at 2 pm for the start of the tour. Be sure to wear walking shoes and comfortable clothing. The cost is $7 per person, and advanced reservation is required. Call 240-4518 for reservations, as space is limited to 25 participants.

 “Rivers, Rails & Rights” Walking Tour

Saturday, September 29th, 10 am to noon
Join historians Dr. Richard Bailey and Mary Ann Neeley on a walking tour that delves into the background and locations of historic sites associated with the Alabama River at Montgomery, railroads and their construction and Union Station. As the walk moves along Commerce Street up to Court Square, participate in the discussion regarding the background of the Bus Boycott and Civil Rights. At Court Square, see where Rosa Parks got on the bus, and on Montgomery Street see where she refused to give up her seat to a white man. Join in the discussion about the outcome of that moment in history. The tour will start at the entrance to the Commerce Street tunnel and last about two hours. Herb Day 2007
Saturday, May 12th- 8 am to 3 pm
The Old Alabama Town Herb Society will host Herb Day 2007 on Saturday, May 12th from 8 am to 3 pm in the South Block of Old Alabama Town. Expert gardeners will be on hand to answer questions at this free event for the whole family. In addition to plants and herbs for sale, former judge, Peggy Givhan will speak on bringing herbs into the flower garden. Herbalist Gina Lancaster will highlight herbal remedies and Chef Clayton Sherrod of Energen will showcase culinary herbs in his cooking demonstration. There will also be children’s activities, arts and crafts vendors and food available for purchase from the Young House Restaurant. Held in conjunction with Herb Day, the Capital City Master Gardener Association will hold its First Annual Plant Sale at Old Alabama Town. Admission to the sale is also free, and the sale includes an abundance of plants grown by Master Gardeners at bargain prices! For more information on either event, call 240-4512.

 Funky Junk Art Competition

Funky Junk Art Competition Exhibit- April 2nd through April 30th
This exhibit sponsored by the Montgomery Clean City Commission, showcases art entries from a citywide art competition. The students were required to use all alternative materials. The exhibit is free and is in the OAT Reception Center. For more information call 240-4512.

 Day of Discovery in Demopolis

Montgomery, AL - It’s springtime and Landmarks Foundation is offering its annual spring trip, this year to the lovely antebellum town of Demopolis, Alabama. Demopolis is a hidden treasure, which will be yours to explore and enjoy on this trip. The date of the trip is Friday, April 20, 2007. The tour includes visits to several beautiful homes as well as several historic antebellum churches. The tour will leave from Old Alabama Town at 8:30 am and will return about 5:30 pm. The tour costs $60 per person, which includes private motor coach with escort, Demopolis guides, tours of three historic homes and other buildings and a catered lunch.  Civil War Walking Tour

Montgomery, AL - Landmarks Foundation invites you to join historians Bob Bradley and Mary Ann Neeley on a Civil War Walking Tour. The tour is Sunday, April 29th from 2 pm to 4 pm. From the Alabama River to the Capitol, there are numerous sites associated with Montgomery’s role in the Civil War. Historians Bob Bradley and Mary Ann Neeley will discuss the building of the gunboat Nashville, Confederate hospitals, the telegram that started the War, the ladies behind the scenes and even a little Civil War period gossip! Join Bob and Mary Ann for an informative and entertaining trek along Commerce and Dexter Avenue. The tour begins at the entrance to the Commerce Street Tunnel. The cost is free to Landmarks members and $5 for the general public. Wear comfortable shoes and bring along a bottle of water. The fundraiser is Friday, May 4th from 6:30 pm to 10:00 pm. All members and friends are welcome to celebrate with us for an evening of fun, food, and entertainment in the Old Alabama Town historical district. The evening will begin with cocktails at 6:30 pm, followed by a lavish buffet-style dinner at 7:30 pm.  Live music will fill the air, and an auction of antiques and other treasures will highlight the evening. Join the walking historians - Mary Ann Neeley, Dr. Richard Bailey and Robert Gamble for a walking tour of three historically significant African-American Churches in downtown Montgomery. The tour includes Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church, First Baptist Church on Ripley Street, and St. John’s AME Church on Madison Avenue. The churches will be open for an interior view, and the tour will focus on the history and architecture of the three churches.  Richburg Quilt Collection Exhibit
January 25, 2007

February 19th until March 24th
Join Old Alabama Town for an exhibit featuring the handsome quilt creations of mother and daughter, Sarah Ann Carpenter Simmons and Lovie Simmons Richburg. These quilts range from the years 1875 to 1985 and are excellent surviving examples of the African-American quilting tradition in central Alabama.  Black History Celebration

Join Old Alabama Town as we commemorate Black History month with our 2nd Annual Black History Celebration. This special program will feature such talents as the Floyd Elementary School chorus and the Sidney Lanier High School concert band. The keynote speaker will be District Court Judge Pamela Robinson Higgins. Judge Higgins is the first black judge on Montgomery County’s district court. Montgomery, AL- Please join Old Alabama Town for an exhibit of Lamps from the Permanent Collection of Landmarks Foundation. From the early frontier dish devices to the more elaborate and colorful hanging fixtures, the purpose of lamps remains the same- to provide us with light by which to live, work and play.  OLD ALABAMA TOWN OFFERS BLACK HERITAGE TOURS

Montgomery, AL- Come celebrate Black History Month at Old Alabama Town as we present Black Heritage Tours throughout the month of February. Highlights of the tour include the 1850s slave quarters on its original site, the 1880s shotgun house, the 1885 church and the 1880s one-room school. Tours will be offered Monday through Saturday at 9:00 am, 10:30 am and 1:00 pm. Tours are available only for groups of 10 or more, and by reservation only. ALABAMA FRONTIER: CULTURAL CROSSROAD SYMPOSIUM

Montgomery, AL- Landmarks Foundation, in conjunction with the Alabama Humanities Foundation and the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts is pleased to present the final program in the symposium series “ALABAMA FRONTIER: CULTURAL CROSSROADS.” This concluding symposium, “Alabama’s Indians Today,” will take place at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts auditorium on Saturday, January 27, 2007 from 8:30 am until 3:45 pm.

Over the past five years, the symposium, “ALABAMA FRONTIER: CULTURAL CROSSROADS” has involved an intensive study of Central Alabama and its major Indian group, the Creeks. Begun in 2002 with discussions by leading scholars on the first European intrusions and the resulting changes in the Creek lives; the series continued through 2006 with the removal of the Creek Indians to the western territories.

This upcoming program will focus on the role and status of Alabama’s current Indian population. Among the speakers will be Dr. Kathryn Braund, an expert of Native Americans in the region; Mrs. Eloise Josey, Director of the Alabama Indian Affairs Commission; Teresa Paglione, an archaeologist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture; Mrs. Jackie Matte, an authority on the MOWA Indians and David Hobbs, a noted re-enactor. There will also be a representative from the Alabama Poarch Indians. Kyle Braund and Tamara Beane will exhibit traditional and interpretive Native American art. Dr. Craig Sheldon and Dr. David Hall will moderate the program.

The day’s activities begin with registration and a light breakfast at 8:30 am, a boxed lunch at noon and will conclude with a tour of the artistic component. For more information and registration call 334-240-4518 or 334-240-4500.

Special Ordeman House Guided Tours

Montgomery, AL- Join local historian Mary Ann Neeley for two in depth guided tours of Old Alabama Town’s Ordeman House and its outbuildings. The Ordeman House is a meticulously restored townhouse on its original site, which depicts upper class life in the mid 19th century. Not only is the Ordeman House Landmarks Foundation’s first restoration, it also houses one of the best collections of Southern decorative arts in the Southeast. The tours will be Sunday, November 5th at 1:30 pm and at 3 pm. The 1:30 pm tour is a special tour for Landmarks Foundation members. The cost of the tours is free to Landmarks members and $5 to the general public. Refreshments will be served after each tour. Reservations are requested, as space is limited.
