Dallas Hanbury, Ph.D., Montgomery County archivist, presents “Slave Health in Montgomery County” as part of Second Saturday in Old Alabama Town. He will focus on the 1850 and 1860 U.S. Federal Census, the records that measure the health of slaves. This wealth of information is fascinating and can complement both estate files and doctors’ bills available at the Montgomery County Archives Department for those researching genealogy. Hanbury has worked as the county archivist at the Montgomery County Archives since 2015. He holds a Ph.D. in Public History from Middle Tennessee State University. His book Seekers of Knowledge: The Development of Southern Public Libraries and the African American Quest for Library Access, 1898-1963 is forthcoming from Lexington Books.
