 Bush Cottage, ca. 1860

image: bush cottage

Built in 1860, the Bush Cottage is an example of a “half house,” with two rooms opening off a wide hall. The house reflects the period’s love of adornment with square columns and fanciful balustrades. Originally it stood two blocks from its present location.

 DeWolfe-Cooper Cottage, ca. 1850s

image: cooper cottage

Newspaper man Thomas DeWolfe built this Italianate cottage with Gothic latticed porch brackets and fanciful ventilator covers that outline the cornice. The interior is typical of the period with a T-shaped hall that widens into a much larger chamber to the rear. Two rooms open to each side of the central hallway. Between the front and back halls are double-paneled doors with glass lights.
 Ware-Farley-Hood House, ca. 1850s

This lovely Italianate structure found a permanent home in Old Alabama Town in the late 1980s. From an old picture and newspaper photographs the restoration of the two-story frame structure with fretwork adorned porches, a stunning replicated cupola and a replaced back wing was completed.
 Nall-Young House, ca. 1850s

A one-story with columned portico, this Greek Revival house is attached by latticed porch to an earlier cottage in the rear. Originally a two-room and loft cottage. In the 1850s a Greek Revival house on the dogtrot plan with four rooms was added. Handsome oak graining and marbleized mantles added a decorative touch. Today the Young House, is open as The Blue Sky at Young House, a popular restaurant in Old Alabama Town.
 Graves-Haigler House, ca. 1840s

The Haigler House represents an Alabama interpretation of a story-and-a-half Tidewater Cottage with end chimneys, porch with rough-hewn square cypress columns and an el wing. Mahogany graining and marbleized mantles were revealed during restoration and a master grainer was able to re-create the beautiful faux work of an earlier artist.

Restoration is complete. The house is Italianate in design, a two-story clapboard structure with cornice bracketing. This house represents a period of returning prosperity after the Civil War and Reconstruction. It is now affectionately called “Montgomery’s Painted lady.”
 Noble House, ca. 1850s

Today its beauty is hidden. Landmarks purchased the house in 1998 and will do extensive research for its restoration. It is a two-story brick with hipped roof topped with metal cresting.
