for Old Alabama Town's Celebrations in April.
The crown jewel of Old Alabama
Town and the first restoration, the 1850s Ordeman Townhouse, stands
on its original site with its dependencies buildings including kitchens
and slave quarters.
Constructed in the
new vogue style of the time, the Ordeman house includes innovative
features such as a bathing room and basement.
Built by the aspiring
young architect, Charles Ordeman, the Italianate home exemplifies
the life of the upper middle class with its high style Rococo
and Empire furnishings.
The Ordeman
House has the unusual feature of a partial basement containing
the dining room and a morning room with a door opening to a
dry moat/stairway leading to a brick courtyard with a well that
is 65 feet deep.
To the rear of the site
is the carriage house, of more recent construction, and a barn
dating from the 1840s that was originally just north of Montgomery.
